Dry Tri at the Y
Never one to turn down a challenge I saw that my gym, the Central YMCA, was doing a set of indoor triathlons and I may have accidentally signed up. Oops 😳
I got the last slot for Monday night and thought it would be a good test of fitness. So with five days to train, no bike practice this year, oh and surgery 7 weeks ago I gave it a crack!
I opted for the Dry Tri - so no swim and instead it went 1.5km row, 6km bike, 2km run. That was the half distance with the options for the mini (shorter) and full and ultra going longer. This, and the fact it was free for gym members, made it a truly accessible event.
Without any particular training I hoped to finish all three events in 40-45mins. I thought that was a sensible aim but I just couldn't switch my competitive side off. The row went well but I did go off a bit quick. On the bike I had to ease off to let my breathing calm down, trying to keep an even pace of 25-28km/hr.
Now the run. Hmm. As I've not been able to run continously for a while I ran 500m, walked a 100m twice but when it came to the third walk I upped the pace, pushing myself as I knew sub 35mins was on the cards. I made it with 34sec to spare!
I know it probably wasn't the most sensible thing to do but it felt great to duck under 35mins - especially since I ran parkrun in 35:55mins this weekend. The dry tri was super, the staff we great and Tom helped motivate me the whole way round (thanks guys). I loved it and maybe an outdoor tri is on the cards for 2017!
