A BHAG for 2017
Ever heard of a BHAG? Big Hairy Audacious Goal - unusually more common in the tech/start up world to give companies an insane goal to push for. Given I work in the tech world I thought I could apply this to my adventures.
Since London Marathon earlier this year I've been looking at what my next challenge could be. I had decided it would need to be big but achievable, scenic - I need a break from city running and flexible given my health issues (you can read about that here: This time next year).
One idea had started to gain a bit of traction and then I went to a great evening of talks organised by Running Adventures (@runningadv). It was incredibly inspiring and the talk Kris King (@coachkingy) had a big impact on me. He made us all flip a coin to make a decision and we had to live by our decision. I flipped my coin with my potential next challenge in mind but the coin said no. I was instantly disappointed and I knew deep down then it was something I *really* wanted to do. The next day I bought a map.
Sometimes the scariest bit of any challenge is making it public and actually telling people. I sounded out a couple of people with the idea first and they didn't turn round and say "you're nuts" - bonus! Side note: this shows just how important it is to have inspiring people around you.
Anyway back to the BHAG - I'm going to run the North Downs Way. Phew I've said it.
I'm going to try and run it in sections, over the course of the year so I can break it down into more managable chunks, and may include a few back to back days in the farther away bits. The total distance is 130miles of undulating, scenic trails running from Surrey to the Kent coast. I don't really have any more plan than that yet but I have a map and I have a goal - wish me luck!
